Research Description:
The main focus of Prof. Joo's research is in electromagnetic excitation of nucleon resonances (N* physics). The study of N* physics is aimed at understanding the internal structure and dynamics of the nucleon and addressing long-standing questions about the relevant sub-nucleon degrees of freedom in the low and medium Q2 realm of non-perturbative QCD. An extensive experimental program of N* physics has been approved and is currently being carried out using CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Hall B of Jefferson Lab. CLAS has a nearly full solid angle coverage and the capability of collecting data for many hadronic final states, simultaneously operating with polarized electron beam and polarized targets. These features make CLAS uniquely suited for the N* physics program. This experimental program will produce a data base with high statistics and large kinematic coverage for invariant mass W up to 2 GeV and will provide new insight into the structure of the nucleon.
