Point defects influencing the physical properties of nonmetallic single crystals are characterized via electron spin resonance and optical spectroscopies. These defects can result from UV, gamma and MeV-particle irradiations, or, they may result from impurity (or dopant) ions incorporated in the crystal during growth. The research is important for developing applications of the materials.
